LANGUAGE

"To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world." - Chinese Proverb

We believe that learning a second language and its’ culture is something that all learners can benefit greatly from. At Redcliffe Primary School, our students learn Mandarin from Kindergarten to Year 6. The Chinese Language program focuses on learning to communicate using essential Mandarin and extending students understanding of the Chinese culture. Throughout, the year students participate in a variety of culturally significant events and also have the opportunity to participate in Mandarin writing and speaking competitions.

In the junior years, songs and games are actively incorporated into the lessons, and throughout the school, topics from across the curriculum are integrated into the Chinese program to give more meaning and a real-life focus to the language study. Students in Kindergarten and Pre-primary also participate in the Early Learning Languages Australia program (ELLA). This is a digital play-based program aimed at making Chinese language learning engaging and interesting through a series of interactive applications (apps).

Students also attend Kung Fu lessons once a week with Master Luong. Master Luong teaches the students about the principals and traditional forms of Kung Fu. In addition, to being a good physical activity and teaching self-defence, Kung Fu also helps students develop important values including confidence, self-discipline, self-esteem and resilience.
